Ynys Enlli

Ynys Enlli

This weekend just gone was spent on a solo trip to Penrhyn Llyn. I went in our little campervan and found a campsite just above the village of Aberdaron, with far-reaching views out to sea and the perfect vantage point for watching the sun rise and set.

The light there has a different quality; the sky somehow feels more expansive than it does further inland. Maybe it’s the feeling of being at the edge of the world, a feeling only heightened by visiting Ynys Enlli.

I spent a lot of time walking that weekend. In between, I booked myself a sauna, swam in the sea, and took a trip over to Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island), an ancient holy site off the coast of North Wales. The whole island was covered in a dense mist, and that, coupled with the eerie but strangely familiar sound of the Atlantic grey seals and their babies, only added to the feeling of being somewhere just on the edge of the world.

The ancient pilgrimage site is steeped in magic and a thick, heavy silence. No mobile reception, no traffic, just the sound of the wind whipping around the rocks and the animals that live there. It was the perfect place to say goodbye to summer, as we cross the threshold into a season where the nights begin to draw in and the days grow shorter.

If you've visited Ynys Enlli, or spent any time on the Llyn, I'd love to hear about it in the comments below, and bonus poits for any recommendations for my next visit. I only live an hour and a half away from this magical place, and I'm already planning my next trip back in October.
